As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention. The same adage works when it comes to learning a language.
Go somewhere or do something where you will be forced to learn. If you are traveling, do your research and make a list of things you need to know.
How do I read street signs?
How do I know the restaurant menu?
Learn generic travel phrases.
Learn also about cultural stuff.
Envision yourself being there.
Here's a good example: In Italy and other European countries, there is always a need for TEFL teachers. However, it's so difficult to be able to obtain a work visa in Italy if you're coming from the United States. Many experienced TEFL teachers say that one of the best ways is to be a language student and a teacher at the same time. This means you may apply for a student visa and at the same time work part time as a TEFL teacher. By becoming a student learning Italian in Italy you will be forced by necessity to get around by yourself. You will have no choice but to learn, live and be in an environment where you will mostly be exposed to the Italian language.
